James Gray: View of the barn, farm buildings and Redhill Cottages from the east. The farm was worked from Withdean Farm, London Road, and derived its name from the red colour of the soil in this area. The two houses seem to have been built during the 1920’s. Valley Drive now runs immediately in front of the houses. jgc_26_010
2018: Due to the large number of trees and bushes, this view from Gatton Park is the best that can be taken today. See jgc_26_011. It shows Redhill Cottages which are about 100 yards east of Dyke Road Avenue just beyond the second turning into Whitethorn Drive. Valley Drive turns steeply to the right past the cottages. James Gray: View of the barn after the construction of Valley Drive and shortly before the barn was demolished. The site is now covered by 144 Valley Drive. Date of photographs – 20 January 1952. jgc_ 26_011
2018: This photo shows 144 and 146 Valley Drive which were built on the site of the barn shown in jgc_26_011, 012, 013, 014 and 015. Modern buildings around make it impossible to get the same views from the different angles. A walkway next to 144 Valley Drive leads up to Gatton Park which is behind the trees at the top of back gardens. (Photographer: Hugh Robinson)
James Gray: These three photographs were taken on 15 January 1939, when the farm had been given up and there were already signs of the coming house building development in this area. Looking at the barn from the south, on the right can be seen the old white scarped track which came up from Withdean and originally led to the barn. jgc_26_013, 014 and 015.

James Gray: Entrance to Redhill Farm from Dyke Road Avenue 28 July 1938, showing the long barn. Today this is the entrance to Valley Drive from the same road. jgc_26_016

James Gray: Further along the same farm track with a good view of the two Redhill Cottages, 15 January 1939. These can still be found today in Valley Drive with several houses to either side but they are quite distinctive. In the valley, the smaller barn, seen on the other pages, and in the far distance, Patcham Windmill. The houses of Valley Drive and Whitethorne Drive now cover the large field. jgc_26_017
2018: Photo taken about fifty yards down Valley Drive from Dyke Road Avenue due to houses on left side of Valley Drive blocking the old view.Redhill Cottages are behind the trees (over the third car on the left) which are at the corner of the second entrance to the Whitethorn Drive loop.
